Demi Lovato: 4 Years Sober & Happier Than Ever
Demi Lovato has always been very open about her struggles with depression and even drug addiction – things that consumed her life from a very young age. The 23-year-old recently opened up about her past struggles with sobriety and how she’s made positive changes in her life moving forward.
Lovato celebrated 4 years of being sober back in March. “I had to learn the hard way that I can’t do parties anymore,” said Lovato to Refinery29. “Some people can go out and not be triggered, but that’s not the case for me.”
Her happy place is on the sofa with elastic pants cuddling next to her yorkiepoo, Batman, or out on dates with her boyfriend Wilmer Valderrama, who she’s been with for over 6 years. She knows that this may sound boring, but being relaxed feels better to her than getting all dressed up to go to a party or a club where people don’t care about her well-being.
Her lowest point was when she wasn’t able to go an hour without cocaine and she would challenge her parents when they were trying to discipline her by telling them, “Try to ground me — I pay your bills.”
Prior to getting sober, she explains that she was a nightmare to work with, but all of that has changed now. “I think what inspires me is remembering that I deserve the best that I can be and also knowing people look at me as a role model — it gives me the fire to continue to be strong.”
One of the things her fans love the most about her is how much she lets them into her life, by sharing photos on Instagram, having Twitter rants when she dislikes something, etc. “I’ve been doing this so long, I literally laugh at the things people say,” she says. “You’re not going to agree with everybody and you’re not going to please everybody.”
When asked what she wants to be when she grows up, she answered:
“That’s easy. Me.”
